Peter Annulli
I approach my work as an observer, refraining from imposing judgments on the subjects I depict. My aim is to create pieces where the viewer is the judge—of the meaning, the emotional, experience.
My practice spans diverse media, including photography, painting, graphic design, digitally enhanced photographic imagery, and prints
on paper, canvas, metal, and acrylic. I extend these forms through woodworking, metal manipulation, and the incorporation of cloth, found objects, and various crafting techniques. The result is an interplay of textures and materials that feels both assembled and organic.
The core of my work is a commitment to the common and the everyday—repairing, repurposing, and transforming materials to build out my ideas, themes, and forms. By engaging with what’s readily available, I allow the mundane to become extraordinary, exploring how the familiar can shift and take on new life. Subject matter often comes to me through by looking deeper objects and entities everywhere I go. I'm drawn to scenes by the play of light, texture, and color, searching for interesting angles in for a composition.
The diversity, creative voice, and freedom of Contemporary Art inspire me greatly. I find this aesthetic deepens meaning and elevates the common and the everyday as worthy subjects for creating art.
I can picture an approximation of the artwork before I begin to figure out how to get it done and other times, I decide I just want to create something visually interesting and begin with anything at hand. If I’m right, I’m right; but even when I’m wrong, I could have been right in some way, so I continue to work on the piece until it feels complete.
This openness to discovery and transformation is what makes my art exciting to create.
